“The Two Most Powerful Warriors Are…Buzz and Woody?” Possibly the Greatest Journalistic Correction of All Time

This happened a while ago, but it’s making the rounds again in Brazilian social media, and it’s too good not to share here. There is really no way to adequately set up this epic mea culpa from the Veja website…so just read.

First, the tweet: Eduardo Jorge said that he didn’t smoke marijuana, that he preferred Tolstoy. The Veja reporter understood wrongly, and the misunderstanding gave birth to the greatest “we messed up” of the century.

Now, the official notice from Veja: Contrary to what we published tonight, the Presidential candidate fro the Green Party Eduardo Jorge did not state that he has among his pastimes watching the animated film Toy Story. Rather, he referred to the Russian writer Leon Tolstoy (1828-1910), author of such classics as Anna Karenina and War and Peace. The Veja website apologizes to its readers, and to the candidate.

This, of course, unleashed the snark.

Translation: It seems that the one smoking marijuana was the reporter from Veja.

And Veja is not alone in the “screw up” department…

Translation: Even better was that one from the Folha “contrary to what we published, Jesus was crucified, not hanged”
